The Greene County Rams topped the Gilbert Tigers 1-0 in eight innings Wednesday night in Jefferson. The Rams have won five of their last six games and are now 8-12 overall and 7-8 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference.
Junior Colton Fitzpatrick had “an awesome night” on the pitcher’s mound, according to coach Mark Sawhill. He pitched all eight innings and had five strikeouts and allowed only three singles.
The Rams’ score in the bottom of the eighth inning came on a wild pitch from Gilbert’s Wes Greder. Junior Riah Nelsen hit a stand up double off the first pitch in the inning. Junior Alex Rasmussen drew an intentional walk. With runners at first and second a fielder’s choice put Nelsen at third and junior Jordan Challen at second with two outs. Junior JC Weitl was at bat when a wild pitch bounced to the backstop and Nelsen raced home.
Nelsen’s double was the only extra base hit in the game, as the Gilbert pitcher notched 11 strikeouts, walked four and hit one batter. Juniors Dylan McConnell, Jordan Hostetler and Rasmussen all hit singles.
The softball team played in Alleman against North Polk and lost a disappointing game 10-8. The game was tied 1-1 after one inning and 3-3 after four innings. North Polk went ahead 6-3 in the fifth inning, but the fames scored twice in the sixth inning for a 6-5 score. The Rams were up 8-6 after the top of the seventh inning, but the host Comets scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh for the final 10-8 tally.
Ram junior pitcher Marissa Promes gave up a season high 12 hits and allowed nine earned runs. The struck out five and walked three.
The Rams had 10 hits. Junior Kayla Mobley hit a triple, and Promes and junior Emily Christensen both hit doubles. Christensen had two singles also, and Promes and sophomore Sydney Koch had singles. Bailey Godwin had two RBI and sophomore Carleigh Paup and Promes each had one RBI.
The game was an upset for the Comets, who are now 5-10 in HOIAC play. It was the Rams’ third HOIAC loss, with their record now at 13-3 in the conference and 22-7 overall.
